Convert modded RC30 G1 to Dev Phone 1
Thanks to a few good men, our modded G1 can now be converted to the Android Dev Phone 1.
Attached is the bootloader from the Dev phone which when flashed to our regular G1 will allow free modding. There is no security check at boot so you can pretty much imagine the possibilities.

Courtesy dream_kill (who got a unit with an engineering bootloader as a warranty replacement - way to go Tmob, give it to a hacker..), cmonex and JesusFreke, we now have an engineering bootloader reflasher in the wild. All it takes is root (sorry guys, still no RC30 hacks.) Want to get it too?
All you need is to apply the attached update.zip (courtesy JesusFreke) to an already-hacked G1. Thats it. (It is signed with the test keys, so if you have JF's rc30 it will Just Work.) But first.. a
BIG HUGE BOLD BLINKING FREAKING WARNING:
If this goes wrong, you WILL DESTROY YOUR PHONE. Seriously. It will go PTHHTHTH. So don't interrupt it, don't let the battery die, etc.
Once its installed, boot with power+camera to see the Androids on Skateboards instead of the simple tri-color boot loader. (Where to go from there is the subject of a future post.)
|
To repeat the instructions, download the attached file, extract it just to check if it downloaded fine. Rename the file to "update" as you have done for earlier updates and follow the same procedure...ALT+S etc.
WARNING: IF YOU SCREW UP, THE PHONE WILL BRICK BEYOND REPAIR
So make sure the battery is full or more than 50% before you jump onto this. The process is faster than a regular update so it should take less than a minute to complete. The phone boots multiple times during the installation so don't freak out over that.
On completion, when the phone starts up fine, turn it off and press Camera + Power button to goto bootloader, you should see the below pic,

When you connect the phone to computer in bootloader mode, it will turn to FASTBOOT. Fastboot is actually a tool which is used to modify the bootloader/kernel etc.
To boot normally, you have to take out the battery.

You can't do that. We are using a modfied recovery.img which has different signatures than what the OTA updates contain, so the update will fail. If you want to apply the official update, you will have to download it on PC and re-sign it with the test keys.
Anyways, we shouldn't accept any OTA updates or try to apply the official updates, you never know what evil trick Google uses next to lock us out.

It has been done so that Google doesn't know that you are using a modded RC30.

Ok so it will no longer display using test keys, but it will also not accept any updates from google. Unless they try to target us and send an update signed using test keys

Does not allow unlocking
Important note: This hack does not currently allow a T-Mobile G1 to be unlocked for use on other networks.
