Default UK G1 get roaming disabled

Now that you know your G1 has a fetish for internet, you would expect T-Mobile to patch it up allowing to truly turn-off data while roaming, but what they have done in UK is disable roaming totally on G1.

Official statement,

Quote:
In order to ensure that customers do not incur unexpected costs, roaming is disabled on new UK G1 models. There is an option which allows users to enable roaming, but when this is selected the user will receive a message to confirm that there will be additional costs incurred. At this point users are then given the option to either go ahead and enable roaming, or to cancel.
This means either you pay the lavish price of data+voice roaming or no roaming at all. If you thought of visiting friends and family abroad this holiday, G1 is not the phone you should be carrying.

Happy holidays.

Default Unlocked G1 also asks if you want to allow data

I have an unlocked UK G1. I am using a Luxembourg SIM card.
I only get a message asking me if I want to allow roaming data usage when I am outside of Luxembourg. Also the message is shown even when the "Don't allow data when roaming" option on the phone is set. So it seems the phone is still trying to access the data network even with this option off. Given that the G1 polls every 2 or three minutes a few bytes or kilobytes, I am very lucky that I selected the "no thanks" option during my visit. I had to click this option about 50 times in one week, probably every time my phone changed between network. I am pretty sure that if I turned on the roaming data option, I would have spent a LOT of money roaming. I will keep a close eye on my bill this month..........

Phew !!. I confirm that I did NOT incurr any roaming charges in the UK with my unlocked UK G1. So you can safely visit the UK with a UK unlocked G1 with a foreign SIM without fear. You are always warned by a pop-up if you attempt to use roaming data and you just always say NO THANKS. Or pop in your T-mobile pre-pay card...
