Now that you know your
G1 has a fetish for internet, you would expect T-Mobile to patch it up allowing to truly turn-off data while roaming, but what they have done in UK is disable roaming totally on G1.
Official statement,

In order to ensure that customers do not incur unexpected costs, roaming is disabled on new UK G1 models. There is an option which allows users to enable roaming, but when this is selected the user will receive a message to confirm that there will be additional costs incurred. At this point users are then given the option to either go ahead and enable roaming, or to cancel.

This means either you pay the lavish price of data+voice roaming or no roaming at all. If you thought of visiting friends and family abroad this holiday, G1 is not the phone you should be carrying.
Happy holidays.
